With $40, five (5) students will have a school bench to sit on and learn!

Donation of benches to schools

The initial donation of 50 benches to Yarpuah Community School in Salayea District and Gbangway Public School was locally sourced and crafted by students from the Lutheran Training Institute (LTI). This initiative aimed to accommodate 275 students, with an average of five students per bench. The benches serve the community well, being utilized for both school-related and general town activities, such as PTA and town meetings. Local production of the benches not only reduces costs but also supports the local economy and enhances the logistical capabilities of schools in economically disadvantaged rural areas. The average cost of each bench is US$40, covering production, storage, and transportation to the donation site

Target for 2024-25:

OBTL aims to accomplish the following objectives:

  • Acquire and donate 1,000 benches/chairs to five underprivileged rural schools in Bong and Lofa Counties, seating 2,500 students off the floor (three students per bench and one student per chair) at a cost of $40 per bench.

  • Obtain and operate three power saw machines for remote communities to assist in cutting wood for bench production, thereby reducing costs.

  • Supply essential school items (backpacks, notebooks, pencils, etc.) to 2,500 students.

  • Responding to some schools' suggestions, OBTL plans to procure cement and additional resources to consider adding cement flooring in classrooms that currently lack it as part of its initiatives.
